How I Work
This is a practical guide to how I lead and build teams.
It's not a rulebook. It's a snapshot of how I tend to operate. If something here doesn't match reality, please let me know.
What I optimize for
I care about outcomes and I care about people. I tend to optimize for:
- Clarity — visible decisions, fewer surprises
- Consistency — trust by follow-through
- Commitment — ownership of the work
- Calm — urgency when needed, stability always
- Culture — scalable systems that support humans
I operate from a simple belief:
Solve business problems by solving people problems.
My leadership stance
Leadership is service. My role is to:
- translate strategy into clear direction
- protect focus during disruption
- make tradeoffs explicit
- empower experts at scale
- grow leaders who don't depend on me
I build systems that don't require superheroes.
How I typically work
Communication
- Async first; sync when alignment or trust matters.
- I value early signals over perfect updates.
- Written clarity scales.
- Silence from me usually means trust, not disengagement.
Decisions
My general pattern:
- 1
Frame the problem
- 2
Gather input
- 3
Make tradeoffs explicit
- 4
Decide
- 5
Document
Alignment matters more than consensus.
What I value in partners and leaders
I look for:
- proactive communication
- curiosity before judgment
- progress over theater
- care for teammates
- surfacing issues early
Ownership and honesty over perfection.
Feedback
I aim to be direct, kind, and timely. I appreciate the same.
If I'm moving too fast, creating confusion, or missing context — tell me.
Truth builds speed.
When things get hard
I lean in.
I focus on presence, clarity, calm problem-solving, and protecting teams from thrash.
My involvement signals partnership, not punishment.
How I think about scale
As organizations grow, trust needs structure. I usually scale through:
- clear ownership boundaries
- strong engineering hygiene
- lightweight connection rituals
- written systems that reduce dependency
I prefer empowering experts over adding layers.
My stance on AI
Optimistic, grounded, practical. I focus on:
- real ROI
- guardrails
- augmenting human judgment
- building capability, not tool dependency
AI is not the end of engineering, it's the expansion.
A few personal notes
I'm motivated by:
- creating something wonderful with others
- building cultures that last
- helping people grow into leaders
- making engineering more enjoyable
- leaving systems better than I found them
I celebrate wins. I design for sustainability, not heroics.
If your growth eventually takes you beyond our team, I still consider that success.
There are no outcomes without people, and there are no people without outcomes. Both are important.
Working agreements
- Surface risks early
- Document decisions that matter
- Treat deadlines as real — and people as real
- Address tension directly, with care
- Protect focus
- Build leaders, not dependencies
If you're ever unsure where you stand with me — ask.
If you want more context, autonomy, or direction — ask.
I'd always rather have a clear conversation than let uncertainty do damage.
